The Fossil Guide in Capitola
Category: beachcombers guide to fossils
Originally, this book was a handbound volume that the author created for a 8th grade master work project at Black Pines Circle in Berkeley back in 2012. The book was a reflection of the author's deep-rooted interests in writing, marine biology, paleontology, art, and photography. Lorena's passion for marine biology had been evident since an early age, as she had already learned the Hawaiian names of fish by the age of 2, assisted with data collection on hammerhead shark feeding at 5, and captured her first moray eel on film while snorkeling at age 8.
In order to bring the book to life, Lorena embarked on numerous excursions to Capitola and the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History. Additionally, she enrolled in a bookbinding class, mastered the stippled ink drawing technique, and engaged in email correspondence with Frank Perry, whose book "Fossil Invertebrates and Geology of the Marine Cliffs at Capitola, California" served as a major source of inspiration for her project. Through these experiences, Lorena was able to create a unique and captivating piece of work that showcased her diverse interests and talents.
